Where the data comes from

Each area page is built from texts published by the competent authority: prefectoral order and departmental federation rules in France, fisheries act and state ordinance in Germany and Austria, cantonal ordinance in Switzerland, orden de vedas of the autonomous community in Spain, state or provincial regulations in North America, the Environment Agency, NatureScot, Natural Resources Wales or DAERA in the United Kingdom, Inland Fisheries Ireland, and the Walloon and Flemish authorities in Belgium.

For every value we keep the source address and the date we accessed it. Both are shown at the bottom of each page.

What a page contains

• the licence or permit, its price and duration, with the official purchase link when there is one;
• the year’s open and close dates, species by species;
• minimum sizes and daily bag limits;
• specific rules (water categories, reserves, banned methods) when the authority publishes them.

When a value is missing

We never fill a value with an estimate. A value we cannot find stays empty and the page says “not published by the authority”, with the body to contact.

How often we check

Rules usually change once a year (often at the end of the year for the next one), and sometimes during the season. We re-check each page at least once a year before the season starts, and whenever an authority publishes a new text. The “checked on” date is the last time its sources were accessed.

Species and techniques

Species pages rely on published scientific studies, cited with their DOI when one exists. The “minimum size by area” tables are computed from our area pages.
