The guide puts the 50 states side by side, with the 2027 opener and its status, the rule it comes from, resident and non-resident licence prices, trout add-ons, limits and a dated source for each state.

How to use the guide

The guide is not an official document: the state’s regulations and the licence you buy prevail, and special regulations on a given water can be stricter. 2027 dates not yet published are calculated from the written rule and marked as such; where a state publishes only an earlier season’s date, that date is shown as a reference, never as the 2027 date. Prices are those of the 2026 or 2026-27 licence year as published. What a state does not publish is said, not estimated.

Frequently asked questions

When is the first day of trout in Pennsylvania in 2027?

Saturday, April 3, 2027, at 8 a.m., from the rule in 58 Pa. Code § 61.1 (first Saturday in April); the regular season runs to midnight on Labor Day, September 6, 2027. The guide marks the date as calculated until the Fish and Boat Commission publishes its 2027 summary.

Which states already publish their 2027 date?

Only North Carolina so far (April 3, 2027 on Hatchery Supported waters). For 17 states the 2027 date is calculated from a written rule, 13 keep trout open all year under a written rule, and the others publish only an earlier season’s date or no statewide trout season: each line says which.

Can I fish opening day in Pennsylvania on a 1-day licence?

No. Pennsylvania’s 1-Day Resident and 1-Day Tourist licences are not valid from March 15 to April 30. A visitor needs at least the 3-Day Tourist licence plus the Trout Permit; the guide gives the 2026 prices and the total.

How current is the information?

Prices and rules checked on September 23, 2026 for the 2026 or 2026-27 licence year, with the date and source on every state sheet; the Pennsylvania rule was read on October 13, 2026.
