Overview
Backing is the line that goes on the reel first, under the fly line. It fills the spool so the fly line sits in wide coils, and it is your reserve when a fish runs far: a good trout in a river, a grayling in the current or a pike taken on the fly.
Each spool holds 50 m (55 yd) of white polyester backing with an 8-strand braided core, according to the supplier. Two breaking strains: 20 lb or 30 lb.
Tip: 20 lb is enough on light trout and grayling reels; 30 lb makes sense on heavier outfits, for pike for example. Attach the backing to the reel with a snug arbor knot, then join it to the fly line with a knot or a loop-to-loop connection.
